Position Title: Postdoctoral Fellow - Plant Pathology
Location: IRRI East and South Africa Hub, Burundi

IRRI is a nonprofit independent research and training organization and is a member of theCGIAR Consortium. IRRI’s research is being done under the framework of the CGIAR Research Program on Rice, also known as the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP), which the Institute leads.

Job Purpose
The PDF will work at IRRI-Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) Hub in Burundi. He/She will take the lead with the IRS in research on rice pathogens and on rice resistance to diseases. He/She will isolate and characterize different rice pathogens from hotspots in ESA countries and develop robust phenotyping and screening methods to differentiate resistant germplasm. He/She will work in close collaboration with breeders to develop pre-breeding materials resistant.tolerant to diseases for different countries in East and Southern Africa region.

Roles and Responsibilities

This PDF position involves doing research in plant pathology for ESA countries. Specific activities include:
  • To conduct research on molecular and pathotype characterization of rice pathogens in ESA. 
  • To develop robust phenotyping and screening methods to differentiate resistant germplasm. 
  • To analyze the diversity of resistance and find broad-spectrum R genes based on the data of phenotypic evaluations using different races of pathogens. 
  • To develop, in collaboration with breeders, germplasm materials resistant/tolerant to diseases.
  • To provide novel information about rice diseases and rice resistance. 
  • To take the lead in developing annual work plans, meetings, and reporting. 
  • To prepare manuscripts for publication.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Plant Pathology, with specialization in genetic or molecular biology
Skills Required
  • Background and experience in host plant resistance (preferred) 
  • Working knowledge in disease resistance breeding and genetics
  • Strong communication skills
  • Participation in research project implementation and experience in project reporting
