Christian Aid is working with others to end poverty in the Middle East. At the heart of this vision is the transformation of the lives of people living in poverty, empowering them to have a brighter future. We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated person for the position of Emergency Programme Manager (maternity cover) to manage and develop Christian Aid’s humanitarian response to the Syria Crisis.

You will take responsibility for the development, management, and coordination of Christian Aid’s response strategy to the Syria crisis. Christian Aid is currently responding through local partners in Iraq and Lebanon and through a sister agency in Syria.

A strategic thinker, you will be familiar with managing humanitarian response programmes in highly complex and dynamic contexts. You will have a proven track record of delivering high impact and effective emergency projects and programmes in compliance with humanitarian minimum standards.

The candidate must have a degree or equivalent in a relevant technical discipline, with considerable knowledge of emergency relief and recovery in complex contexts, preferably in the Middle East, with in-depth knowledge of development and emergency issues in the region and Syria in particular.  The candidate must have extensive experience of strategic planning and management of large and complex budgets, as well as a working knowledge of internationally recognised humanitarian standards, such as HAP, Sphere and the Red Cross Code.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS/EXPERIENCE:
  • Degree or equivalent in relevant technical discipline. 
  • Detailed knowledge and considerable experience of emergency relief, rehabilitation and recovery programme issues in complex contexts and preferably in the Middle East context 
  • In-depth knowledge of global development issues, including policy and advocacy topics and familiarity with emergency problems relevant to the Middle East and the Syrian crisis in particular 
  • Knowledge of the political, social and economic context of the Middle East region and the development issues and challenges it faces. 
  • Knowledge of capacity building tools and techniques. 
  • Knowledge of Sphere and Red Cross Code of Conduct, awareness of HAP. 
  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, gender and the livelihoods approaches in relief and recovery. 
  • Professional experience living and working in a disaster affected country. 
  • Extensive experience of strategic planning and management of large and complex budgets. 
  • Relevant experience of emergency project/programme management working with and through local partners. 
  • Experience of distance management of staff.
