This is your opportunity to use your technical skills and knowledge to support the establishment of a Noise Registry for UK waters – a key component of the government’s implementation of the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive for underwater noise. The registration of spatial and temporal data on activities such as seismic surveys and pile driving is needed to assess the potential cumulative effects of some noise sources on marine species.

JNCC is valued for the efficient delivery of UK’s environmental priorities for over 20 years, and has advised both the UK government and the devolved administrations on UK-wide and international nature conservation.

You will join a dynamic Offshore Industries Advice team which provides expert, impartial and objective conservation advice on the effects of offshore activities related to oil and gas extraction, renewable energy, etc. You will use your excellent interpersonal and communication skills to establish productive relationships with your colleagues as well as external stakeholders such as regulators and industry. This fixed-term post will also support the provision of advice for geophysical surveys (e.g. seismic surveys), including the continued improvement of quality assurance and standards of advice on impact assessment and mitigation.

We’re looking for candidates experienced in working with a diversity of partners, large databases, GIS and data quality control procedures. An understanding of underwater sound and of marine ecology, particularly with reference to offshore industries and the associated environmental impacts, would be an advantage.
