Summary of Position
IREX seeks a Media Expert to work on a USAID-funded civil society and governance program in Guatemala that aims to strengthen and develop the capacity of Civil Society Organizations (CSO) in Guatemala to play a more effective role in addressing citizen security, accountable governance and corruption issues. The Communications and Media Expert will support the project by providing training, mentoring and technical expertise to Guatemalan civil society organizations and other partners throughout the country. The Communications and Media Expert will also help CSOs develop outreach and engagement strategies to work with traditional and digital media activities on advocacy for a variety of issues, including gender equity.

Summary of Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical expertise to project management team in relevant program design issues
  • Develop and maintain a keen understanding of challenges and issues facing effective media and communications in Guatemala
  • Design and conduct technical trainings on using social media, technology for advocacy, and working with the news media
  • Work with the project management, local partners and local staff to conceive directions for growth of current projects and devise new strategies to assist Guatemalan CSOs
  • Cultivate relationships with relevant local and international media and other partners
  • Support efforts in project planning, budgeting, and administrative issues.
  • Represent IREX publicly and support its organizational development 
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor''s Degree in Journalism, Communications or related field preferred
  • Seven years'' (minimum) experience in civil society strengthening, with a specialization in communications and working with the media
  • Extensive experience in providing media training for CSOs, communicating with the media, and designing and executing advocacy and engagement campaigns
  • Proven expertise leveraging innovative technology and social marketing tools to deliver key messages
  • Strong familiarity with the Guatemalan media and technology landscape
  • Experience with international donor-funded development projects, particularly in Guatemala and/or Latin American countries, desired;
  • Experience in designing, planning, managing, and delivering technical assistance, technical training, and consultations to CSOs;
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills required
  • Demonstrated leadership, integrity, and versatility
  • Professional-level proficiency in Spanish and English required
