SLP SENIOR MANAGER FOR
FORESTRY AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Job Summary:
Conservation International (CI) is looking for a Senior Manager to lead the Forestry and Climate Change initiative of the Sustainable Landscape Partnership (SLP) program operating in Indonesia. This is a key program role will oversee the day-to-day implementation and delivery of SLP’s initiatives related to forestry management (including FMU development), Climate Change Mitigation (REDD+) and Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA).

The candidate will also work closely with the Senior Policy Advisor to advocate innovative government policies at the national, provincial and district levels. This role is expected to facilitate policy interventions that enable and encourage protection of Indonesia’s natural capital. These policy interventions will require an effective combination of regulatory and policy instruments related to forestry management, environmental regulations and economics.

This position will require regular travel to the province and districts to provide oversight and advice field based staff. Critical to the role will be the ability to work in a manner that prioritizes communication and coordination with colleagues and peers; both horizontally (other Managers, Advisors and consultants) and vertically (supervisors or subordinates).

Responsibilities:
  • Project Development and Implementation – Together with other SLP personnel develop, drive, update and monitor progress against SLP’s work plan for the development of forestry initiatives (specifically FMUs, village/community forestry, etc.) and the establishment of jurisdictional initiatives related to climate change mitigation/adaptation within SLP landscapes (North Sumatra and West Papua). 
  • Policy and Regulatory Support - Lead policy initiatives at national and sub-national level to protect important forests for the long-term and realize the goals/objectives of the Sustainable Landscape Partnership (SLP); and Provide technical advice on climate change issues and policies to CI global climate team, governments (UNFCCC/DNPI/Other SLP Regencies) and other partners such as Indonesian universities and NGOs.
  • Capacity Building and Partnership Development - Assess capacity building requirements and support training to develop and maintain transparent advisory to government partners and relations with local private sector and civil society partners on aspects related to climate change initiatives and forest carbon projects; and Develop capacity CI and partners in the areas of forestry and climate change (adaptation / mitigation) through learning-by-doing training activities and preparing training module/packages with presentations, and on-going evolution of training modules to meet learner needs;
  • Communications and Reporting – Provide written updates on strategies, on-going activities and outcomes for reporting to donors, partners and senior management team (SMT); and Represent CI in various forums and discussions with partners to advocate for CI’s vision of Healthy Sustainable Societies and strategies including the SLP approach and models; and 
  • Funding and Proposals - Assist in fundraising, strategic planning, partnerships, liaison with other agencies and partners
Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • S1 degree in forestry, policy, law, landscape management or natural resources management related sciences, with at least 5 years of experience on forestry and sustainable development in Indonesia. 
  • Understanding of forestry and development issues at regional level.  
  • Experienced in policy formulation or field implementation of FMUs, or REDD+, and low emission development (LED) approaches, methodology and implementation.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations with a wide range of people. 
  • Strong negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution skills that can be applied to working with community groups. 
  • Demonstrated competency in field team management and multi stakeholder facilitation. 
  • Ability to contribute to the efficient and effective operation of the project, adapt to changes in workload and positively influence the project team, and work under pressure and with multiple deadlines. 
  • Willingness to travel and work long hours, occasionally to remote areas and working on weekends or after hours if needed. 
  • Excellent communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.
  • Computer literacy with experiences in electronic communications (i.e. E-mail, Internet, etc.) as a user
