Institute of Development Studies (IDS) Vacancy: Research Fellow in Digital - United Kingdom

Research Fellow in Digital x 2 (710)

Hours per week: 35 (1.0FTE)

Contract type: Permanent

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a leading global institution for development research, teaching and learning, and impact and communications, based at the University of Sussex in Brighton, UK.

We are looking for up to two new top class Research Fellows to join the growing team in the IDS Digital and Technology cluster. You will share our commitment to engaged excellence, and be equally comfortable undertaking cutting-edge field research and analysing novel approaches as facilitating multi-stakeholder workshops and briefing senior leaders on future directions.

Successful candidates will bring together broad and deep understanding of digital and technology issues in international development with the ability to develop new research agendas to shape policy, inspire practice and advance knowledge.

You will have either a Ph.D or equivalent research experience, as well as an excellent track record in generating research grant and consultancy income. You will have a growing or established reputation as an original thinker, analyst and communicator with the ability to work across disciplines and issues with ease. We are particularly interested in one of the positions being filled by an individual with excellent quantitative and data science skills, and the ability to utilise these to develop solid quantitative analyses of digital and technology issues.

The new digital and technology cluster at IDS has four broad thematic areas of focus in line with the broader IDS strategy.

These are:
  • Digital economy;
  • Digital government and service delivery;
  • Digital citizenship and rights;
  • And digital sustainability and resilience.
Cutting across all of these thematic areas are key questions of power, politics and practices, and how these influence the contribution of digital technologies to wider development goals. Current programmes include Making All Voices Count; work with USAID on real-time data in development; and with DFID on the frontier technologies and the future of digital development. Our overarching strategic focus is how the revolution in digital technology can be harnessed to address issues of inequality, inclusive societies and more sustainable development gains.
