The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association Job Vacancy: Assistant Chief Executive - Westbury, Wiltshire - England

The Ornamental Aquatic Trade Association (OATA) seeks a highly motivated individual to support the Chief Executive and provide scientific and technical advice and assistance to support OATA’s lobbying and marketing activities.

Key Functions and Responsibilities
As Assistant Chief Executive, you will be an integral part of a small team and will undertake a wide variety of work in support of the Chief Executive, including:
  • Presenting the industry’s views clearly and coherently, both verbally and in writing. This may involve writing responses to Government consultations, attending meetings, giving presentations, and dealing with enquiries.
  • Preparing and updating care sheets and guidance relevant to fish and fish keeping
  • Delivering extensive distance learning programmes
  • Gathering, analysing and collating, often complex and extensive, scientific, technical, legal and other relevant information
  • Dealing with members’ enquiries, including assisting them with technical issues.
  • Preparing reports for, and participation in, Directors’ Board meetings.
The job will be primarily office based though you may be required to work on your own at meetings and other events, anywhere nationally and occasionally internationally. 

Essential skills
  • Higher level qualification in marine, fish or freshwater biology, chemistry/biochemistry or animal science.
  • Good knowledge of fish and fish keeping, including knowledge of water chemistry as it applies to fish husbandry (preferably in the ornamental fish sector).
  • Ability to collate, interpret and represent information and statistics from technical and non-technical sources.
  • Ability to formulate and present the views of the aquatic industry clearly and coherently, both verbally and in writing, including the preparation of technical and non-technical reports.
  • Ability to work independently and proactively with little or no direct supervision and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Familiarity with Word and Excel.
Desirable skills
  • Good knowledge of, or previous experience working in, the aquatics industry, pet trade, their representative bodies, or government.

Its core mission is to protect and promote the ornamental aquatic industry and to ensure its longevity by proactive and continuous lobbying and marketing activity at local, national and international levels as well as promoting education and training within the industry and among the hobbyist to encourage and support responsible pet ownership.
