The Organization and Position Background

The Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) USA (“ALIMA USA”) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization registered in the State of Massachusetts. It is the US partner of the international medical humanitarian organization, The Alliance for International Medical Action (“ALIMA”), which is based in Dakar, Senegal, and Paris, France.

ALIMA operates a new model for responding to humanitarian crises: it brings together the medical expertise of international aid workers with that of national medical organizations and global research institutions to provide quality medical care to people in need. By sharing resources and expertise, ALIMA and its partners are expanding access to care for communities at risk while improving humanitarian medical response capacity in some of the most challenging contexts in the world.

Since its creation in 2009, ALIMA has treated over two million patients in ten countries, primarily in West and Central Africa. ALIMA’s team has grown to 1500 staff with a budget of nearly $34 million in 2016. Its network of medical partners has expanded to five and its research activities have developed from pilot phases to conducting the first large-scale clinical trial of anti-Ebola treatment in Guinea. ALIMA was awarded the European Union’s First Prize for Health Award in 2015, just 6 years after its inception.
ALIMA USA, Inc. was established in 2014 with the aim of supporting the work and development of ALIMA, primarily by raising funds for ALIMA’s operations. In December 2015, ALIMA USA and ALIMA together decided to invest in ALIMA USA’s infrastructure, staffing, and expertise to increase the ability of ALIMA USA to raise funds, awareness, and other support as needed for ALIMA.

The Executive Director (ED) of ALIMA USA reports to the Board of Directors of ALIMA USA through the Chair, and has the overall strategic and operational responsibility for carrying out ALIMA USA’s activities in the United States in support of the medical humanitarian work of ALIMA. The ED works closely with ALIMA’s Secretary General, Executive Director, and other key members of the Dakar and Paris based ALIMA teams. The ED is an ex-officio non-voting member of the ALIMA USA Board.

Specific Objectives of the Position:
  • The ED is responsible for designing and implementing the objectives and strategy for the annual action plan, including strong emphasis on fundraising, staff management, financial management, and representation of ALIMA’s global operational interests in the United States.
The specific objectives of the ED are as follows:
  • Growth – spearheading the growth of ALIMA in the US in support of ALIMA by implementing an aggressive fundraising plan with a primary focus on raising unrestricted funds from private foundations and major donors in the US and a secondary focus on digital marketing.
  • Increased Visibility – developing and implementing a plan to raise awareness about the work of ALIMA, including in the media, at professional conferences, to the public, and to the research community.
  • Strengthen network of ALIMA in the US – exploring and following up on established and new partnerships with other organizations and academic institutions, recruiting for strategic HR needs, and seizing on advocacy opportunities.
  • Management of ALIMA USA – overseeing the administrative and executive management of the ALIMA USA office and supporting the development and functioning of the Board of ALIMA USA in governing the organization.
In addition, he/she will be responsible for managing or participating in specific projects at the request of the ALIMA USA Board and ALIMA as needed.

Specific Responsibilities of the Position:
Produce a yearly action plan for ALIMA USA with specific objectives and indicators. This plan is developed with the support of ALIMA USA’s board and the input of ALIMA’s executive committee.

Fundraising
  • Together with the Development Manager, implement a strategy for private fundraising in the US with a particular emphasis on raising unrestricted general funds from private foundations and major donors and increasing a donor and email base through digital marketing with an objective of doubling unrestricted income in each of the coming three years. This will include:
  • Cultivating current major donors and prospects
  • Researching and actively following up on potential major donor and foundation leads
  • Organizing donor meetings and events
  • Ensuring sounds donor data management
  • Working with the ALIMA digital team and consultants to develop and implement digital engagement strategy
  • Seek out restricted private and public grant opportunities in the US in support of ALIMA’s operations and work closely with the ALIMA grants management and operations teams to prepare and submit proposals and oversee the sound management of any successful grants managed by ALIMA USA.
  • Work with the ALIMA USA board and ALIMA staff to support fundraising activities in the US.
  • Provide stewardship of grants to ALIMA USA and grant agreements with ALIMA.
  • Manage one direct report, the Development Manager, and any additional staff or consultants engaged to support ALIMA USA’s development plans.
Communications and representation
  • Develop and implement a communications strategy to raise the profile of ALIMA USA in the media and to key audiences in the US in order to support the fundraising and programmatic objectives of the organization.
  • Represent ALIMA USA to foundations, major donors, international institutions, global health initiatives, relevant government institutions, and the media as per request from ALIMA and in line with the ALIMA USA fundraising and communications strategy.
  • Plan and organize public events, donor events, and meetings in support of ALIMA USA’s fundraising and communications strategy, and when requested by ALIMA in support of the organization’s overall objectives.
  • Develop tools for and ensure regular communication with ALIMA USA donors about ALIMA activities.
  • Ensure regular internal communication about ALIMA USA activities to the board of ALIMA USA and the board and management team of ALIMA.
Administrative and executive management
  • Oversee the office and administrative activities of ALIMA USA in the US, based in New York, and ensure compliance with all legal and tax affairs related to the incorporation of ALIMA USA as a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit.
  • Develop and maintain policies and key procedures for grant making, grant management and relationships between ALIMA and ALIMA USA.
  • Ensure the management of day-to-day office affairs, accounting, human resources, tax and banking business with the support of a bookkeeping consultant. Oversee preparation and reporting of monthly financial accounts and an annual audit in coordination with the Board Treasurer.
  • Manage any short or long-term employees of ALIMA USA according to best human resources practices.
  • Coordinate and convene ALIMA USA board and board committee meetings.
The position is based in New York and will entail travel within the United States, with occasional travel to Dakar Senegal (ALIMA’s operational headquarters) as well as periodic visits to ALIMA field operations (West and Central Africa).
 
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role, preferably in non-profit development and/or communications.
  • Track record of successful fundraising in the United States.
  • Understanding and experience of global health issues affecting the less developed world.
  • Strong support of ALIMA’s mission, work, and values.
  • The ability to represent ALIMA USA at the highest levels within governmental bodies, foundations and other potential donors; within academia and the scientific community.
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage budgets, review financial results and operate basic financial tools.
  • A team player with an open collaborative working style, who is interested and able to manage and develop a team.
  • Goal oriented relationship builder, with excellent public relations and negotiation skills.
  • Strong administrative and planning skills.
  • Energetic, self-motivated and resourceful, with the flexibility and hands-on approach to thrive in a fast-moving “start-up” organization.
  • Experience working in an international, networked organization a plus.
  • Advanced degree a plus.
  • In addition to fluency in English, knowledge of French an asset.

This is a full-time position, preferably based in New York. Salary is commensurate with experience and includes health and retirement benefits as well as a generous leave policy.
