The Nature Conservancy Job Vacancies: Community Manager & Community Senior Manager, Jakarta

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is a conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. In Indonesia, TNC has been supporting improved natural resource planning and management for more than 25 years, including working with government, private sector, and local communities.
We currently have several openings for:
COMMUNITY MANAGER
The Community Manager is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the community-related initiatives of TNC Indonesia Terrestrial Program (ITP) in different forest use allocations, i.e. conservation forests, production forests, and non-forest areas across Indonesia. S/he uses the full range of participatory methods, tools, and processes to meaningfully engage communities, government, companies, and multi-stakeholder bodies in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the community-related programs. S/he advises and informs staff and partners on the application of these tools. The Community Manager supports the development of key partnerships. S/he supervises and coordinates team members, and works closely and coordinates with a wide variety of the Conservancy staff, government agencies, other conservation organizations and academic communities. She leads ITP work to develop SIGAP training modules and materials, and work with other training organizations to deliver the training workshops on regular basis. S/he serves as the principle contact to the national government agencies, other conservation organizations, civil society organizations, foundations and the academic community at national level with regards to ITP community work. S/he also serves as the primary contact of ITP to the TNC Global Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities Program.
This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Develop key partnerships with the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Village, NGOs, and companies.
  • Support field staff in engaging local community through TNC Community Empowerment Approach (SIGAP) application to achieve local conservation goals and social objectives (community empowerment, people’s well-being, etc.).
  • Develops and support mechanism to replicate SIGAP across Indonesia, by identifying and working with NGO partners, supporting processes to influence policies, supports QA/QC across SIGAP replication villages, and measure success against the agreed indicators.
  • Identify and build partnerships with private and public training organizations to deliver SIGAP training workshops on regular basis.
  • Developing and delivering SIGAP training modules during regular training workshops together with other staff and training organizations.

Community Manager is based in Jakarta. S/he reports to Community Engagement and Protected Area Manager with dotted reporting line to Terrestrial Program Director.

Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in engaging local communities, relevant district government agencies, companies, multi-stakeholder management bodies, etc. to achieve local conservation goals and social objectives.
  • Knowledge of social and community development principles, tools, and processes
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant disciplines (community development, social survey, protected area management, and natural resource preservation) and regions.
  • Experience in training and curriculum/process design.

COMMUNITY SENIOR MANAGER

The Community Senior Manager leads, manages and implements the community-related initiatives of TNC Indonesia Terrestrial Program (ITP) in different forest use allocations, i.e. conservation forests, production forests, and non-forest areas.  S/he is a member of ITP Senior Manager Team (SMT) and is accountable for terrestrial’s community or social outcomes in priority areas in Indonesia under the direction of the Terrestrial Program Director.  S/he provides strategic leadership and support for the Conservancy’s conservation and community engagement work. Together with other ITP senior managers, s/he establishes overall community engagement priorities for ITP, develops community strategies, and influences policies that will achieve the goals and objectives described in the ITP Conservation Business Plan. The Community Senior Manager serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, civil society organizations, foundations and the academic community at national level with regards to ITP community work.  S/he plays a leading role in donor identification, cultivation, and stewardship for the program; disseminates best practices; supports training and analysis to best implement organizational measures of success; and develops partnerships.

This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Promotes TNC community work to policy-makers that would promote community forest tenure, livelihood, and empowerment, by developing key partnerships with the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Ministry of Village.
  • Promotes TNC community work to the scientific communities at the national and international levels, which utilizes and synthesizes the collected data and lessons learnt from TNC work.
  • Leads the implementation of mechanism to replicate TNC Community Empowerment approach (SIGAP) across Indonesia, by identifying and working with NGO partners, supporting processes to influence policies, supports QA/QC across SIGAP replication villages, and measure success against the agreed indicators.
  • Enhances the existing social monitoring and human well-being assessment framework and coordinates their implementation to assess progress and the impacts of our work in East Kalimantan.
  • Support fundraising, managing the implementation of several projects, putting together project reports, and monitoring project progress, developing TORs and contracts for Consultants.

The Community Senior Manager reports to the Terrestrial Program Director and is based in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree and 10 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of current Community REDD+ and community forestry trends and practices globally, specifically in Indonesia.
  • Knowledge of methods and standards of community based forest management, and experience in conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives
  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes and social objectives.
  • Successful experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.) including extensive networking with high-level conservation contacts; political savvy.
