Lecturer for Surgery in Cameroon 

The Partner
Université Protestante d’Afrique Centrale (UPAC) is situated in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. It was founded and is supported by 14 Protestant churches in Western and Central Africa. The university is organised in four departments: Protestant Theology and Religious Studies, Social Sciences and International Relations, IT and Communication as well as Health Sciences.

The Project
The Cameroonian public health service lacks well-equipped health care facilities and qualified medical professionals. The department of Health Services is in need of lecturers - especially with a surgical background – having both theoretical knowledge as well as working experience. With the support of an European professional since 2015 it was possible to improve the biomedical education and to start a Master’s Programme in October 2017. For further qualification of staff and students the university is now looking for another external professional.

Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Development of curricula for the Master’s Programme in Biomedical Sciences for surgery and anatomy
  • Giving lectures and practically-oriented courses
  • Capacity building of staff in anatomy, emergency care and casualty surgery
  • Mentoring students during internships at hospitals
  • Supervision of a multidisciplinary laboratory
  • Tutoring of trainee nurses and laboratory technicians
  • Offering advice for setting up the new Medical School
  • Networking and collaboration with cooperating hospitals in Yaoundé
  • Supervision of emergency health station and students
  • Promoting exchange with the medical department of the University in Tübingen and the German Institute for Medical Mission (DIFÄM)
The professional will be working closely together with the staff of the department for Health Services.

Requirements
  • Citizenship of EU member state or Switzerland
  • Medical Specialisation in surgery
  • Medical PhD is required
  • Experience in teaching and working, also abroad
  • Excellent command of French
  • Good command of English or German
  • High degree of cultural sensitivity
  • Flexibility and resilience
  • Willingness to participate in an ecclesiastical surrounding
