One person in three in the
world lives in poverty. Oxfam is determined to change that world by
mobilizing the power of people against poverty.
Around the world, Oxfam works
to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of
poverty and thrive. We save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when
crisis strikes. And we campaign so that the voices of the poor influence
the local and global decisions that affect them. In all we do, Oxfam
works with partner organizations and alongside vulnerable women and men
to end the injustices that cause poverty.
Our Secretariat is based in Oxford, with advocacy
and campaigns offices in Washington DC, New York, Brussels, Geneva,
Brasilia and a liaison office with the Africa Union in Addis Ababa.
This post will be part of the OI Secretariat Advocacy & Campaigns team and based ideally in Denmark.
About the campaign:
The
purpose of EVAWG campaign is to catalyze, with others, a critical mass
of citizens and influencers in 20 countries to prevent violence against
women and girls by 2019. Violence against women and girls (VAWG) is a
global pandemic. VAWG is rooted in social norms that place greater value
on the contributions, worth and power of men and boys, than those of
women and girls. In virtually all aspects of human life, women and girls
are overtly or implicitly considered to be inferior to boys and men.
To
prevent VAWG, women and men must know about women’s human rights, be
convinced that it is to everyone’s benefit that gender and power
relations are more equal and be moved to demand this. This takes time,
and requires changes in attitudes as well as social norms. Oxfam
International wants to tackle EVAWG by focusing on changing social
norms. Our aim is to sensitize our supporters and donors, and to
influence policymakers and community and thought leaders on the
importance of addressing discrimination against women. Our key objectives are:
- To create awareness and outrage about the ranges of injustices faced by women in the context of the fight against poverty
- To position Oxfam as a key voice on these issues
- To mobilise supporters to act in solidarity with women and girls, their organizations and movements, wanting to live a life free of violence
Oxfam
International is looking for an experienced professional with solid
knowledge on women’s rights and gender justice, particularly violence
against women issues. The lead of Ending Violence against Women and
Girls (EVAWG) campaign will oversee the development of effective
strategies to achieve campaign objectives, and will manage all aspects
of campaign planning and implementation.
The successful applicant will have
- Excellent national campaigning skills, especially focused on attitudes, beliefs and social norms,
- Excellent global and national campaign leadership skills and experience,
- Proven experience working with international alliances,
- Solid understanding of gender analysis
- Proven commitment to promoting gender equity. Fluency in English (written and verbal) is essential.
