Description:Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Associate to support our London-based communications and advocacy team, working closely with and providing administrative support to the UK Director, the UK Media Officer and other HRW staff. The Associate will help to maximize the quantity and quality of UK media coverage of HRW and our work, through pitching reports, op-eds and HRW staff for media interviews, and help conduct targeted advocacy towards the UK government (Ministers, advisers and officials), parliamentarians and political parties across a range of country and thematic issues. The successful candidate will also help to organize meetings and events with Ministers, parliamentarians, policy-makers and journalists, for those HRW staff that come through London, as well as help organize press conferences and advocacy events. This position will begin before the end of February 2016 and will be based in HRW’s London office


  • Providing advocacy and research support to the UK Director, including assembling briefing packs on specific issues; 
  • Maintaining the London HRW advocacy database and helping disseminate HRW reports and materials to key advocacy targets;
  • Organizing advocacy meetings and events for the UK Director or for HRW staff coming through the London office;
  • Assisting with research and formatting of HRW advocacy outputs from the London office, including submissions to parliamentary inquiries;
  • Tracking relevant UK political and policy developments;
  • Taking calls from journalists and assisting with media queries; 
  • Helping to build close relationships with UK-based journalists and media outlets;
  • Sending out press releases to key media contacts;
  • Pitching HRW’s work and spokespeople to London-based media;
  • Maintaining and regularly updating the London HRW communications database;
  • Monitoring media coverage of HRW in the UK;
  • Providing day-to-day administrative support to the UK Director;
  • Assisting with hiring, training and supervising interns;
  • Helping to organize events; and
  • Carrying out other duties as required.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in international relations, social science or related subjects is required. A post-graduate qualification is desirable.

Experience: Minimum 1 to 2 years of relevant work experience in advocacy or the communications field. Experience in non-governmental organizations or intergovernmental organizations is desirable.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
  • Prior administrative/project management experience, unflagging attention to detail, flexibility, and strong organizational skills are required. Previous proofreading and budgeting experience is desirable. 
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision and work independently is required, as is ability to show tact, diplomacy, and maturity in dealing with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work in response to changing project deadlines and staff needs is required.
  • Experience with information management and online systems are desirable.
  • Strong communication skills both written and oral and the ability to deal with individuals at all levels internally and externally.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. 
  • Demonstrated interest in international human rights and the work of international nongovernmental organizations is preferred. 
  • Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications in required; HTML proficiency a plus.
Other: Applicants for this position must possess current UK work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.

Salary and Benefits: Salary range starts at GBP 24,000. Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive compensation and employer-paid benefits.
