POSITION SUMMARY
The Assistant Marine Coordinator leads and participates in marine conservation programs in Maui Nui including the management, development and coordination of conservation activities with multiple community and agency partners to advance policy and research initiatives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Assistant Marine Coordinator leads and participates in the development and coordination of conservation activities with community and agency partners to advance initiatives such as marine area planning and designations, and community-based learning networks and field research.

This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Assists in the development and implementation of marine management planning processes
  • Coordinates and supports community involvement in government processes
  • Communicates with community groups and agencies
  • Develops learning materials
  • Leads discussions with groups and documents meeting processes and discussion
  • Conducts interviews, writes reports and keeps records
  • Collects scientific data in coastal and marine areas with partners
  • Leads work teams, supervises volunteers and coordinates partners
  • Communicates publicly in a professional manner
  • Maintains open communication with staff and partners
  • Furthers the Conservancy’s strategic goals

RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
  • Work closely with administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
  • May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area.
  • Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and meeting fundraising targets.
  • Networks with diverse groups, including community groups, land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for and publicize the work of the Conservancy.
  • Works under minimal supervision; must make independent decisions based on experience and judgments and maintain effective communication with supervisor and other staff.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in marine conservation-related field and 1 year related experience in marine conservation, science, education, outreach, planning or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to recognize marine plant and animal species by sight, Hawaiian name, scientific name, and common name to complete marine management activities.
  • Experience working in natural marine systems in Hawaii, preferably Maui.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Experience working with community groups in marine management and policy in Maui, Hawaii and the Pacific.
  • Experience training and supervising volunteers to conduct field research.
  • Experience performing physical work while snorkeling or diving in open water or the shoreline for 6 hours at a time in challenging weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Preferred 1 – 3 years related experience in ocean resource management.
  • Experience and skills in communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means.
  • Experience organizing community groups
  • Knowledge and or experience with the state administrative rule making process and marine designations and policy in Hawaii.
  • Experience and skills in facilitating small group discussions
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, marine management and natural resource preservation in Hawai‘i and on Maui Island.
  • Ability to complete tasks independently on time.
  • Valid driver's license
