JOB TITLE: CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Environment Trust is a long established (1984) environment and heritage charity based in South West London. We act locally to bring people together to conserve and enjoy the natural environment, green spaces and built heritage where they live. We have an annual income of approximately £200k, raised from grants, contracts, event income, corporate volunteering activities, donations and membership. We currently work in three boroughs: Richmond, Hounslow and Kingston, but plan to expand to cover a larger area.
Our current CEO has been in post for six years and, after modernising the work and systems of the Trust, is now moving on to set up a new charity. Like many in the voluntary sector, the Environment Trust has had to respond in recent years to the changes in the funding landscape, and to adapt to reduced local authority funds and other constraints. This has not been easy and there is still work to be done. The organisation has evolved considerably in recent years and the new CEO will play a key role in shaping the new strategy. We need an energetic, competent, experienced, innovative new CEO to build on what we’ve done already and lead us into a sustainable future. Both for the Trust and for the local area.
As with many small charities, the CEO role at the Environment Trust incorporates both the big picture – strategic and business leadership – and the day to day oversight of operational and financial management. You will need to be able to demonstrate vision, business acumen, attention to detail and people skills. You will need to work closely with the small staff team and the Trustees, and take everyone along with you.

- Reports to: Board of Trustees
- Line management: Heritage Project Manager, Nature Conservation Manager, Operations Manager, Fundraising and Partnership Manager, Finance Officer and Events Officer.
- Salary: £41,500 – £45,000, depending on experience

Main duties and responsibilities:
- Leadership: Be the face and voice of the charity – its principal ambassador. Develop ET’s role and position in the sector.
- Strategy: Work with the Board to develop the charity’s strategic vision and be responsible for leading its implementation.
- Partnership and Business Development: Lead the promotion and development of ET’s work, raising our profile and maximising our reach. Seek out and build new partnerships with supporters, funders, other charities, local community. Work towards the achievement of long term sustainability, developing the charity’s business model and maximising income.Liaise with the Board to develop and lead on the implementation of the charity’s financial plans, including setting budgets, formulating income generation strategies and overseeing all fundraising activities.
- Management: Lead, motivate and develop the staff team. Be responsible for all operations and business activities to make sure they are consistent with strategy & mission. Support the Trustees and enable good governance. Maintain effective financial management and control systems. Ensure ET complies with the law, in-house policies & ethical practice.
You will have:
- Significant experience in a charity leadership role at a senior level
- Strong understanding of charity finance and performance management
- Experience of business planning, business development and fundraising
- Experience of project management and service delivery in a charity context
- Proven ability to set and deliver budgets
- Knowledge of charity governance
- Inclusive, flexible & consultative approach to leadership
- Experience of team leadership and line management
- Demonstrable commitment to our cause
- Excellent communication and public speaking skills
- Relevant degree or professional qualification
