The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera. We are now looking for:

ZSL Indonesia is a highly diverse programme with projects involving climate change, public-private-people partnerships, sustainable landscape management, in addition to species conservation (namely the Sumatran tiger), protected area management, and combatting wildlife crime.

The UKCCU/NICFI Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that contribute to land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”.

Key Purpose of the Job 

The UKCCU/NICFI through KELOLA Sendang Project works with the Government of South Sumatra, national and district level governments, communities and the private sector to facilitate and support the government, private sector and local communities, to establish and pilot the sustainable landscape management partnership approach in the Sembilang-Dangku landscape of South Sumatra. The proposed impact of this project is to achieve “Inclusive economic growth and community prosperity, biodiversity conservation, forest protection and restoration, and the ending of deforestation, peatland drainage and wildfires that reduces land-based Greenhouse Gas emissions”.

To achieve such impact, KELOLA Sendang is working to find a model in effort to restoring the function of conservation areas, also reduce and prevent deforestation in conservation areas. Two restoration model areas are in the Dangku Wildlife Reserve and the Solok Buntu Area, Sembilang National Park. Both area models have similar problems, including encroachment and communities that illegally living in conservation areas. Therefore, the restoring ecosystems activities faces quite complex challenges because the area that must be restored is currently still managed by encroachers.

Each conservation area stakeholder is expected to be able to jointly find a model in handling the problem of encroachment also necessity to restore deforested areas. To achieve sustainable forest management, every stakeholder in the area needs to encourage community involvement in the management of the conservation area. One method that is being implemented is ecosystem restoration through community engagement or conservation partnership.

To help developing and accelerate the forest restoration/rehabilitation in conservation area, the Project needs consultants to assist forest restoration/rehabilitation on the ground in both area models. The consultants will be responsible in executing all implementation of forest restoration/rehabilitation activities related UKCCU project and other relevant projects, and also communicate and engage with various stakeholders including the local government and communities.

Scope of Work:

The Forest Restoration Consultant will coordinate activities in relation to the planning, implementation and tracking of project activities related to landscape restoration as well as provide technical assistance and contribute to knowledge generation. Cooperate with BKSDA South Sumatra and Sembilang National Park in developing forest restoration/rehabilitation strategies and field activities during the implementation phase. He/she has responsibility to ensure that the goal and objectives of the UKCCU project are achieved in high standard and in timely manner. He/she also needs to ensure the implementation of forest restoration/rehabilitation activities related UKCCU project and other relevant projects, and make sure that all relevant partners and stakeholders are engaged.

General assignment of Forest Restoration Consultant:

  • In coordination with Restoration Coordinator and Conservation Manager, communicate and coordinate with relevant stakeholders and partners/consultants in developing forest restoration/rehabilitation planning and implementation
  • Assist in planning all activities in relation to the development of forest restoration/ rehabilitation activities in conservation area
  • Assist in developing and reviewing conservation partnership program
  • Assist in developing and reviewing role model for solving forest encroachment and deforestation problems
  • Responsible for writing activity reports and progress reports of all restoration/rehabilitation-related activities.
  • Other general project-related duties as and when required.

Recruitment Qualification:

  • At least Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Forestry
  • At least 2 years experiences working or conduct environment base research in South Sumatera
  • Previous experience in forest restoration/rehabilitation program
  • Previous experience working or research in conservation area
  • Previous experience communicating and engaging with various stakeholders
