Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI) Foundation supports the development of the fishing communities and supply chains of these fisheries through programs that support economic improvements and social stability for the people.

The successful candidate will engage with the program teams to develop gender inclusive approaches and capacity building trainings for women and men involved in small-scale tuna fisheries supply chains. The Gender Officer will work with the Program Director and Program Managers to identify tools and approaches for overcoming potential barriers facing gender equality and women empowerment in small-scale tuna fisheries supply chains, with the goal of strengthening our inclusive approaches including women’s economic enterprises. The focus is on community members in small-scale tuna fisheries communities in Northern Sulawesi, with documentation of lessons learned, and approaches that are transferable across MDPI working sites.


The Gender Officer (GO) is a new position in the organization and will be responsible to the Program Director. The GO will work on a variety of tasks related to ensuring gender inclusive approaches are implemented across MDPI sites, identifying at which sites and nodes in the supply chains and communities where women’s roles can be strengthened and recognized. The GO will lead on the gender integration of financial services for specific actors in the supply chain, navigating any potential behavior changes and limiting factors identified to hamper implementation. The GO is expected to contribute to other areas of MDPI’s work that fall under gender equality and women empowerment as necessary and is expected to have a close collaboration with all three of MDPI’s program staff. The position will involve travel to the field (remote fishing villages across Indonesia) as well as interaction with a variety of stakeholders, predominantly fishing industry.   • Assist and report to Program Director
  • Work collaboratively with each department Manager and team as required to ensure gender inclusivity in MDPI’s programs
  • Ensure gender-disaggregated information in data collection activities and reports
  • Conduct a participatory gender analysis to fully consider the different needs, benefits, impacts, risks and access to / control over resources by women and men in MDPI’s sites contexts
  • Ensure all aspects of the trainings and reports are gender sensitive
  • Providing applied experience in gender research methods and practices to the process of designing development strategies, projects, and activities that address gender equality gaps
  • Develop constructive male engagement strategy to enable gender empowerment in small-scale fisheries management

Qualifications and requirements:

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in related field
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experiences in conducting gender analyses and assessments in Indonesia, ideally in natural and or coastal resource management context, including gender integration in program management
  • Solid understanding of key gender equality and women’s empowerment, and sustainable development
  • Analytical thinker and problem solver able to come up with creative solutions to diverse problems
  • Considerate of local cultures and settings
  • Able to work collaboratively with teams and independently
  • Time management skills on projects
  • Ability to stay positive, supportive, and open to new ideas or approaches solutions to solving problems
  • Good command of the English language
  • Considerate of sensitive data and settings
