Purpose of the role

We’re looking for an experienced press officer on a fixed term contract for a period of 6 months. As part of a small team responsible for Friends of the Earth’s press and media work, you will use your media and digital publicity skills to deliver high-quality, high-impact media coverage which helps to achieve a better, safer, flourishing environment and elevates Friends of the Earth’s campaigns and brand.

Key responsibilities and tasks

  • Develop media campaigns which help to achieve campaign success and promote Friends of the Earth’s activities, partnerships and brand
  • Deliver a broad range of high quality and targeted media coverage in a range of different media including online, print and broadcast with an eye to making new relationships and targeting non-traditional outlets
  • Day-to-day duties include writing press releases, comment pieces, quotes and other copy as required to a high standard
  • Write briefings and prepare spokespeople ahead of interviews and events
  • Respond to press enquiries and build and maintain relationships with journalists
  • Monitor and evaluate press coverage – including producing round-ups and reports to share progress and success internally
  • Be prepared to work flexibly out-of-hours where necessary and be part of the out-of-hours on-call press rota

Person specification

Essential

  • Solid experience working in a busy press office or agency and responding to media requests
  • Can demonstrate innovative and creative publicity ideas that have achieved high-quality coverage and real-world impact
  • Ability to turn complex issues or causes into news stories in a simple and engaging way
  • Ability to demonstrate judgement on reputational risk or negative news stories
  • Confident writing skills for different types of media, audiences, and communications channels
  • Able to prioritise competing priorities, work to tight deadlines and remain calm under pressure
  • Experience of working on cross-channel communications campaigns, with the knowledge of how to link media with social, digital, supporter, and other communications to amplify impact
  • Demonstratable experience of selling in confidently when building relationships with journalists, or building on your existing network of journalist contacts

Desirable

  • Knowledge of, or interest in, environmental issues especially climate change
