Swiss Red Cross Job Vacancy: Country Coordinator Disaster Risk Management - Thimphu, Bhutan

The Swiss Red Cross (SRC) is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement - the world's largest independent humanitarian organization. The movement has three parts: the National Societies, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
Since 2014 the SRC has a small office in Bhutan to support the Foundation of the Bhutan National Red Cross Society. The process is accompanied by a public health project. A second one is planned with the Department for Disaster Management under the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs (MOHCA). This project aims to continue works initiated earlier in collaboration with IFRC.

Therefore we are looking for an experienced

Country Coordinator / Disaster Risk Management (DRM) expert 
to be based in Thimphu, Bhutan with frequent travel to the project districts.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Managing and overseeing of all SRC activities in Bhutan in close cooperation with the National SRC Programme Officer
  • Planning and co-managing a pilot project for disaster management in one district, in close cooperation with the Department for Disaster Management of the Royal Government of Bhutan
  • Liaising and coordinating with all governmental and international actors involved in Disaster Management (DM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
  • Providing coordination and advisory support to the evolving process of founding a National Bhutan Red Cross Society
  • Supporting the public health project when required
Requirements
  • Expertise in the field of humanitarian aid/development cooperation with specialization in DM and DRR and related capacity development of local stakeholders, favorably with knowledge or experience in public health/community based health
  • Proven international work experience (preferably in Asia) in DRM programming including participatory and multi-stakeholder approaches as well as experience in the management of project teams/offices including financial management, monitoring, evaluation and Project Cycle Management with narrative and financial reporting
  • Solid work experience within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement including capacity building and organizational development
  • Strong empathic attitude to understand beneficiaries, partner organizations and other related stakeholders to empower others as well as develop skills to ensure sustainability in their context
  • Ability to network, coordinate and cooperate with government authorities, partners and other actors
  • Diplomacy, sensitivity to cultural differences and the adaptability to a challenging work environment
  • Proficiency in English (working language)
Conditions
12 months minimum with the option of extension, starting from June 2016 or per agreement. Adequate salary, social insurances, travel and accommodation expenses provided.
