GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
To develop and implement the media strategy for Sea Shepherd Global, to increase Sea Shepherd’s awareness through various media channels and to oversee all external communication of the Organisation.

To manage the administrative responsibility for the Media Department including fielding and evaluating incoming requests from internal staff members and third parties.

To work with the other media coordinators that oversee various geographical media locations, for instance the United States, Australia and New Zealand, allowing for continuous time zone media coverage and availability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(including, but not limited to, the following):
  • Strategy
    • Work closely with the Global Directors and other media coordinators to create and implement a media plan for Sea Shepherd in-line with organisational strategies and the mission statement.
    • Assist with campaign preparations and media planning including updating websites, media sites and social media as required.
    • Enhance existing media relationships and develop new relationships to ensure that Sea Shepherd’s vital conservation message achieves maximum exposure and reaches the widest audience possible.
    • Obtain free advertising on online, press, radio and/or TV.
    • Stay abreast of and track press coverage involving Sea Shepherd and relevant marine wildlife news.
    • Assist with media planning for fundraising and merchandise sales.
  • Administration 
    • Work closely with the media team (Media Productions / Graphic Art / Online) and Global Directors in specific projects and media requests. 
    • Communicate with staff to facilitate media requests and respond to media related enquiries. 
    • Field and respond to incoming media requests including scheduling interviews, providing quotes, reviewing logistics for on-site filming opportunities, fulfilling print and photo archival requests while maintaining copyright integrity. 
    • Create, edit and distribute communication including press releases, press conference announcements and website postings. 
    • Follow-up with media contacts on the employer's media coverage for print archives.
    • Track, research and share Sea Shepherd media coverage and relevant news stories.
    • Archive press and print materials for future reference.
    • Propose best methods for improving existing processes and procedures.
    • Manage and update online media contact database and distribution lists.
    • Answer international and local media requests.
    • Monitor all types of media including online and press.
  • Event Coordination
    • Co-ordinate press conferences.
    • Publicise, organise and document VIP events.
    • Arrange interviews.
  • Management / leadership
    • Oversee media team and provide guidance. 
    • Assist Global Directors with media requests and duties.
  • Technical
    • Oversee media team and provide guidance. 
    • Assist Global Directors with various media responsibilities when required.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Occasional travel may be required.
    • The role will involve liaising with the SSGlobal team, responding to the media@seashepherdglobal.org email address.
    • The role will report to and take direction from the SSGlobal team, but also work closely with the various country directors and other national media coordinators. 
    • The role will require the successful candidate to show initiative and put in place various how-to / key message documents to allow various spokespeople to stay on message. 
    • The successful candidate will be required to attend weekly staff meetings with SSGlobal representatives, mostly in the Amsterdam HQ. 
    • Campaign support will be provided by the media coordinator as required. 
    • Other reasonable duties will be carried out as required.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
SSGlobal will look for ways (i.e., classes, seminars, webinars, books, etc.) to help the media coordinator widen their knowledge base in areas relevant to media department. The media coordinator will be encouraged to seek out similar opportunities and present them to their supervisor for approval.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
B.A. in Communications / Journalism or equivalent work experience in a related field.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, preferably native speaking. Additional languages will be highly regarded.
  • Strong computer skills, writing, online databases, etc.
  • Experience working at a nonprofit preferred, especially experience in the media department.
  • Preferably located in The Netherlands or Western Europe and/or in possession of a valid residency permit.
