ZSL International Job Vacancy: Wildlife Database and SMART Officer - Bogor, Indonesian

The Zoological Society of London is an international wildlife conservation organization with a focus on science-based and pragmatic solutions. ZSL has been active in Indonesia for about 10 years, with a particular focus on the overlap between industrial development and biodiversity conservation. ZSL Indonesia is based in Bogor, West Java, with existing field projects in Jambi and South Sumatera. We are now looking for:

Wildlife Database and SMART Officer

Terms and Condition
Start Date: November, 2016
Duration of Contract: One year fix- term Contract, with potential to extend
Work Area: Wildlife Database and SMART Officer will be based in Bogor.
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday from 09.00 am up to 05.00 pm
Reporting to: Head of Technical Support Unit


Key Purpose of the Job
The Wildlife Database & SMART Officer will be responsible for database management-related tasks ranging from routine data entry to Geographical Information System (GIS) data processing and analysis that support ZSL projects, grant proposals, and any other initiatives.

The Wildlife Database & SMART Officer will be based in Bogor.

Main Responsibilities

People
The Wildlife Database & SMART Officer will work closely with the Data Analyst & GIS Officer, and report directly to the Head of Technical Support Unit (TSU).

The post-holder must treat any data collected under this project with confidentiality in accordance to ZSL policy.

Responsibilities
Post-holder will have a degree of project oversight and ZSL Indonesia’s SMART software
  • Lead in developing and managing an inventory of data from all ZSL Indonesia projects.
  • Lead in analysing various biodiversity data sets from ZSL Indonesia projects and other initiatives.
  • Input, manage, and analyse new and existing data in the SMART software system.  
  • Produce GIS maps relating to wildlife populations and their distribution and related information.
  • Provide technical and administrative support, through the central ZSL Indonesia database, to project managers and other project staff in planning and reporting requirements, including reports to donors and project partners.
  • Assist with training large groups of internal and external participants on the use of various tools, including GIS, Global Positioning System (GPS), and data processing and analysis, and SMART
  • Perform any other duties as required

The job requires continued professional internal and external interaction/ communications, both in person and via phone and email

Mental Demands
The position will require close attention to detail and therefore concentration on the work in hand – precision and accuracy being vital attributes.

Flexibility
The position will be relatively routine in terms of day-to-day tasks during office hours – however sometimes e.g. during field trips or when a workshop is being organized the next day, some flexibility in working hours may be required.

Working Conditions
This post is office based in ZSL’s office in Palembang, South Sumatera. However, travel to field sites and other ZSL offices will be required.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience
  • Minimum bachelor’s degree in an applied or related discipline, such as statistics or biology.
  • Experience in processing and analyzing various forms of satellite imagery/data (GIS) and biodiversity data from field surveys.
  • Experience in managing large biodiversity and socio-economic databases
  • Experience in the use of GIS modelling software such as Model Builder and statistical analysis software such as SPSS.
  • Ideally, some experience of writing scientific reports and papers.
  • Prior experience working for an international NGO, and working directly or indirectly with Government of Indonesia institutions is advantageous.
  • Highly motivated and pro-active, capable of working independently and leading a field team.
Knowledge
  • Understanding and applies fundamental concept and principal of a professional discipline or technical specialty relating to the position.
  • Demonstrate good knowledge of information technologies and applies it in work assignment.
  • Broad knowledge of conservation issues in Indonesia.
Skills & Abilities


  • Computer literacy (excellent IT skills); competent in the use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and other MS tools;
  • Able to work independently without supervision but also accustomed to working in a team;
  • Good communications skills - able to express complex information in a simple and succinct manner;
  • Self-starter, pro-active and uses initiative - can work independently and priorities own work load;
  • Preferably a high level of written and spoken English;
  • Good oral, written, presentation and facilitation skills;
  • Flexible and able to work under pressure and often to tight deadlines; including an ability to prioritize jobs;
  • Highly motivated;
  • Willing to work at any circumstances both independently or in a group, such as in remote areas with very limited facilities;
  • Excellent in writing skills and oral communication both in Indonesian and English;
  • Able to deal with tide schedule and unscheduled tasks, and target oriented;
  • Willing to travel extensively across the project sites in Indonesia.
