Project Manager

General Management

Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise (IORE)

Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

Ocean expertise abounds on Canada’s east coast. In Nova Scotia alone, ocean-related activity generates $5 billion in revenue and produces 60,000 jobs – 14 per cent of provincial employment. More than 10 per cent of all researchers in Atlantic Canada are focused on oceans. And an increasing number of private sector companies are discovering new economic opportunities in key ocean-related sectors. The Centre for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) is being established as a hub for applied innovation in the ocean sector. The Institute for Ocean Research Enterprise (IORE) exists to align these assets to benefit the region and the marine science and marine technology sectors. By launching programs and brokering partnerships among industry, universities, government and private institutions, IORE is working to enhance both the competitiveness of ocean industries and our knowledge base.

Reporting to the COO as ‘Project Manager’, you will support the operations at IORE generally and manage a number of projects to meet the objectives of the SmartAtlantic program, program development for COVE, and other initiatives. You will participate in the organization’s strategic planning processes, speak publicly on behalf of IORE, and will be accountable for successful completion of project deliverables on budget and on time. With strong communication and facilitation skills, you are comfortable leading working groups and understand that diplomacy, effective listening and the ability to persuade are essential to the effective management of projects. You have demonstrated competency with IT tools and will be comfortable developing an approach for and implementing data collection processes to measure the organization’s performance to key performance indicators (KPIs), a customer relationship management application, and using project management software. Ideally, you are familiar interfacing with both industry and government, and have had training or previous employment relevant to the ocean technology sector.

Ideal candidates will be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment to balance competing priorities and the needs of numerous stakeholders from diverse backgrounds. The ideal candidate will have completed a Bachelors degree or college diploma, preferably in Engineering, Science, Computer Science, or Management and will have demonstrably relevant work experience. Strong written and oral English language communication skills are imperative, and the following preferred competencies are an asset:

  • Familiar with managing to metrics such as KPIs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
