Lang Tengah Turtle Watch is searching for a highly sociable
individual who will assume the internship position of Assistant Camp
Manager on their island-based sea turtle conservation programme off the
east coast of Peninsular Malaysia between 1st May - 15th July 2016.
The successful applicant will assist in managing our volunteer
project on Turtle Bay, Lang Tengah and its personnel, comprised of: one
permanent staff member, up to 3 research interns and 8 volunteers. You
will be one of the lead representatives of our organisation on the
island, it is therefore your responsibility to maintain and further
strengthen the healthy relationships with the resorts that we have spent
great care and time in fostering.
The daily routine of the Assistant Camp Manager will involve ensuring
that the daily volunteer schedule is adhered to, with the volunteer's
enjoyment and entertainment being paramount. Our project is a fun and
relaxed place to be, so we are looking for someone who can carry out the
daily routine without it becoming monotonous. It will be up to your
discretion to tackle any unforeseen situations accordingly, while trying
not to alter the overall daily schedule.
Typical daily activities undertaken by the project are: nest
inspections, nighttime beach patrols, camp chores, jungle trekking,
snorkelling & cliff jumping. Upon dispatch to the site, you will be
given a two-week training period.
Applicants must be confident in themselves, their manner, be easily
approachable and be comfortable interacting with people from many
different nationalities, cultures & ages. This is an integral part
to the role, as much of your time will be spent welcoming new volunteers
(and integrating them into the project), liaising with resort
management, staff & tourists around the island, as well as local
authorities. Organisational & budgeting skills will also be
required, as you will be required to undertake camp resupply
approximately once a week, involving trips back to the mainland and
coordinating volunteer arrivals.
Essential Requirements:
- An undergraduate degree (or higher) in a related field
- Previous experience working and/or volunteering on volunteer projects (preferably multiple experiences)
- Have a relatively high level of fitness & health, with a strong passion for adventure activities (daily excursions & activities in the tropical heat can be physically demanding after many weeks on the project)
- Fluent in English
- Happy to live and work in rustic, communal conditions
- PADI SCUBA Certified
- Experience working with sea turtles
- Experience working and/or volunteering in rural programmes for extensive periods of time
- Basic budgeting and accounting skills
This is a rare opportunity to gain experience working with a
small-scale, young conservation organisation. The payment for this
internship will be dependant on the experience level of the successful
applicant. This internship may also be followed-up with an offer of
full-time employment (at the discretion of Lang Tengah Turtle Watch) and
a discretionary bonus depending on performance (also at the discretion
of Lang Tengah Turtle Watch).
Lang Tengah Turtle Watch will be willing to contribute a small amount
towards international travel costs to Malaysia, and will cover all
in-country travel costs to and from Lang Tengah, as well as all living
costs whilst on the project. Any additional international travel costs
to and from Malaysia will be at the expense of the successful applicant.
Applications should include a C.V. and Cover Letter, and be directed to raphe@langtengahturtlewatch.org before the 16th March 2016.
If you don’t receive a response from Lang Tengah Turtle Watch before
the 19th March 2016 please consider your application to be
unsuccessful. Please understand that we are a small organisation and we
are therefore unable to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
