An exciting opportunity has arisen for a biostatistician to join a multi-disciplinary team in an International NGO and research unit based in Yangon, Myanmar. You will be involved in clinical trials and observational studies that aim to improve the health of people in Myanmar.

Medical Action Myanmar (MAM) is a medical aid organisation, whose mission it is to improve access to quality health care in Myanmar, particularly for people living in remote areas. MAM supports a large number of Village Health Workers (VHW) who are trained in activities relating to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of malaria, tuberculosis, and other basic health care needs.

MAM works in close collaboration with the Myanmar Oxford Clinical Research Unit (MOCRU), which a tropical medicine research unit formed as an extension of the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) in Bangkok. Projects currently being undertaken by MOCRU include the investigation of strategies to control and eliminate malaria in Myanmar and an evaluation of methods used to diagnose and treat of fever in remote rural areas.

MAM/MOCRU are looking to employ someone to lead the conduct of biostatistical aspects of trials and observational studies. The successful applicant will report to the director or a person designated by the director and will provide statistical advice and support to research and operational team members across the organisation.

Key objectives and responsibilities in general:

Provision of statistical advice and undertaking analyses:
  • To support the design of clinical trials and quasi-experimental research designs, including sample size determinations
  • To prepare the data for analysis, including checking the accuracy of the data
  • To conduct statistical analysis of data
  • To present and interpret research findings
Capacity building:
To conduct training sessions with MAM and MOCRU staff on the use of statistical packages and on introductory (bio)statistics

Selection criteria: 

Essential:
  • A PhD or other postgraduate degree in biostatistics, statistics or with a strong statistical component (or a Master’s degree with relevant experience)
  • Extensive experience in use of statistical software packages (ideally Stata or R) for manipulation and analysis of data sets
  • Expertise and experience in fitting and interpreting complex statistical models, particularly multilevel models
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate statistical concepts to people with limited statistical knowledge
  • Outstanding organisational skills with the ability to plan and prioritise multiple tasks and meet deadlines
Desirable:
  • Previous experience in clinical trials research, tropical medicine research and/or working with an International NGO
  • Experience in using interrupted time series or segmented regression analysis methods to evaluate the impact of an intervention using observational data
  • Experience in conducting training in introductory biostatistics and/or statistical software

Gross salary including benefits depending on experience between $3,500 and $5,000 per month
