Job Description
The YOSL-OIC is seeking a qualified candidat to join the Forest and Wildlife Protection Unit (ForWPU) team to address the dynamics that threaten wildlife and biodiversity conservation in and around the Leuser Ecosystem. The YOSL-OIC is recruiting for a Technical Assistant for Forest and Wildlife Protection Unit to join our patrol team to manage field activities that result in reduced poaching, wildlife trafficking and other forest related crime in the Leuser Ecosystem. The TA will also be representing the YOSL-OIC on wildlife crime issues at both the regional and national levels.

Responsibilities:
  • Function as the expert advisor in all matters pertaining to forestry and wildlife crime,
  • Support the use of SMART technologies to combat wildlife crime (poaching, hunting, fishing) and wildlife trafficking by relevant wildlife authorities (BBKSDA, BBTNGL, Dirjen Gakkum) to strengthen concept and project demonstration, feasibility studies, and scale-up;
  • Review of current means and modes (and capacity) of law enforcement activities with respect to forestry and wildlife crime.
  • Strengthen coordination and implementation of law enforcement (including investigation and intelligence, arrests, prosecutions and convictions) at regional level.
  • Expand and deepen the range of actors and methods involved in anti-poaching and anti-trafficking activities with an emphasis on promising technology
  • Train government and non-government officials and rangers including customs agents on new technologies to detect trafficked wildlife products including standards of use and maintenance;
Candidates skills/experienceIt is essential that applicants have a proven investigative background in the field of forestry related crime investigation and possess skills in the use and creation of information searches utilising intelligence and data systems. They must also be competent in the preparation and presentation of key reports and documents.

Required Skills
Education:
Preferably masters degree in a relevant field such as forestry, biodiversity, land use management, social sciences, and ecosystem services (either with ecological or socio-economic background) with professional specialization in issues of biodiversity, sustainable landscape management and wildlife crime.

Experience:
  • At least 5 years of overall professional experience, with incremental responsibilities ;
  • At least 5 years of experience and in-depth knowledge of biodiversity and sustainable landscape management issues ;
  • Demonstrated track record in the preparation of project documents, proposals, evaluation reports and, preferably also, publications within the theme of biodiversity, wildlife crime, ecosystem services and land-use is a highly sought qualification for this position;
  • Knowledge of environmental issues, policies and programme related to the Leuser Ecosystem is preferred, but not required;
  • Specific experience with forestry and wildlife crime project development, with a demonstrated track record, is an eliminatory requirement.
Language:
  • Excellent mastery of written English is preferred;
  • Good working level of oral English.
