Aktis Strategy is an organisation led by some of the world’s foremost consultant practitioners in problem-solving for fragile and conflict-affected countries. With knowledge and expertise across security sector reform, governance, justice/rule of law, conflict management and countering extremism, Aktis specialises in devising, managing and evaluating complex programmes to address challenging political and institutional problems.

Aktis in East Europe:
Aktis has in recent years established its presence in East Europe, dealing with regional challenges related to Strategic Communication, Independent Media development, Behavioural Change etc. Working with local and international partners Aktis is delivering innovative work across the Baltics States and elsewhere in the Former Soviet Union (FSU)-countries. As Aktis’ presence in the region grows, Aktis’ East Europe team is looking for an additional Project Manager to help manage current and future projects.

Role Summary:
The Project Manager will lead a project team and bears overall responsibility for producing project deliverables on time and to the highest quality. This will involve ensuring that the team remains focused, motivated and engaged in providing the client the outputs they need to ensure confidence in their reporting systems, as well as sound financial management and accountability of the project budget. The Project Manager, therefore, requires strong leadership and people management skills, with credible experience leading similar teams.

Key written deliverables could include monthly, quarterly and annual reports for each project (pending internal reporting systems for on a project-by-project basis). As all written deliverables need to be produced to a very high standard, the Project Manager needs to be able to synthesise available evidence into clearly structured and well written deliverables. Demonstrated experience producing high quality written deliverables is critical, as well as the ability to synthesise disparate inputs into coherent and cohesive analysis.

As the key point of contact for the project client, the Project Manager will continuously engage the client to ensure the client’s needs are met and the project team is able to respond effectively to new client requests. As projects will respond to donor challenges in a complex conflict context, the Project Manager will take an agile approach when working productively with the client to solve their unique reporting challenges.

The Project Manager will report directly to the Aktis East Europe Country Manager and respective Project Director in all matters related to work deliverables and project activities.

Person Specification
We are looking for someone who:

  • Is confident and effective at engaging with a diverse range of clients, staff and stakeholders;
  • Takes firm responsibility for the successful delivery of the programme;
  • Can maintain focus and deliver on objectives when working under pressure;
  • Can apply logic and method to effectively manage competing priorities and tasks.
Skills & Experience:
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate proven experience in the following areas:
  • Effective leadership and management of multi-cultural teams to deliver high-quality written deliverables; this will include clear tasking, coherent approaches to planning and problem solving;
  • Strong communicator, able to clearly set priorities and focus the team in a manner that motivates them to deliver high quality and empowers them to do their best work;
  • Proven problem solving, able to quickly understand challenges and potential risks
  • Effective writer, able to write clearly and synthesise inputs from other team members to produce high-quality deliverables that meet client needs;
  • Knowledge of the particular context of the FSU countries and technical areas such as strategic communication, independent media development etc.
  • Work experience of M&E and processing field data from multiple sources so as to identify improvement in the delivery and design projects
  • Effective at co-ordinating people and resources to achieve maximum proficiency and performance;
  • Proven experience leading large and complex development projects for either multi-donor trust funds or development donors, ideally in fragile and conflict affected context;
  • English (fluent) with Russian (ideal, but not essential).
