SNV Indonesia is looking for a: Media & Communication Specialist

Our global teams of local and international advisors work with local partners to equip communities, businesses and organisations with the tools, knowledge and connections they need to increase their incomes and gain access to basic services - empowering them to break the cycle of poverty and guide their own development.

In Indonesia, SNV works together with local partners to provide technical expertise in three sectors: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Agriculture and Renewable Energy.

In the WASH sector, SNV is focused on increasing access to safely managed sanitation and in sustaining positive changes in hygiene behaviour, by providing scalable, market driven solutions tailored to rural and urban contexts. Currently, the WASH sector is delivering 3 large scale programmes: Supporting STBM in the Lampung Province, WASH SDGS: Urban Sanitation and Hygiene for Health and Development, Voice for Change Advocacy Programme while ensuring a long term partnership with the USAID funded IUWASH programme. SNV's WASH sector works closely with national level ministries, key stakeholders such as AKKOPSI, Jejaring AMPL and the Sanitation Partners Group, as well as with other international organizations and donors.

In the Agriculture sector, SNV reduces poverty and improves livelihoods through innovative themes/solutions that address sustainable markets, food and nutrition security, and climate change, with additional balancing benefit and youth employment provided across those themes. Currently, Agriculture Sector is working in several projects in Indonesia, including promoting pig feed distribution in Timor Island, developing responsible sourcing from rubber and palm oil smallholders in Sumatera, building inclusive coffee markets in Flores, and supporting climate change response to local government in Indonesia amongst other projects. SNV's Agriculture sector works in close partnership with smallholders, private sector and financial institutions.

Scope of Work

The objective of assginement is to ensure that SNV's communications are effective, targeted and credible. The consultant will develop and implement strategies to raise SNV's public profile, as well as the profile of issues that SNV addresses within its WASH and Agriculture sectors.

Specific scope of work is the following:

  • Develop and implement SNV's communication strategy, in line with corporate guidance, SNV's branding and desired positioning
  • Collect and process the information needed for SNV's website, and to ensure the website is regularly updated
  • Ensure all projects have a coherent set of communication materials that clearly detail the project's scope and key activities, considering different target audiences
  • Assist project team members to prepare and position for public events, including connecting to media and presenting information to both national and international audiences
  • Ensure the development and production of an adequate set of relevant communication resources, including the development of simple, proper and friendly database system, such as photos, short videos, short project updates, leaflets, generic ppt presentations; and update these materials on an annual basis
  • Propose and oversee the roll out of initiatives in social media that profile SNV's work and the development issues that SNV is focused on
  • Provide training on media & communication to SNV's team and to its partners when needed, including on the job training
  • Ensure the overall coherence with corporate branding and global positioning

Key responsibilities are the following:
  • Conduct research on SNV's strategic and project documents, and collect information from SNV's project team and partners; and extract critical, relevant and accurate information to be shared with different audiences
  • Advice SNV's team and partners and provide training and on-going support to ensure consistence and coherence in all communication and branding issues
  • Advice and manage relationships with the press
  • Update and manage website and other social media channels, notably SNV Indonesia twitter account
  • Lead the production of SNV's publications, reports, flyers, leaflets and others; ensuring these are accurate, adequate and user friendly considering the different profile of target audiences
  • Guarantee SNV's project visibility and profiling in line with SNV's and its donors branding guidelines
  • Comply with SNV policy and standards, including but not limited to its finance/ admin procedures and Code of Conduct
Candidate profile
  • Advanced degree in a related field (e.g. communications, marketing, public relations, journalism);
  • At least 7 years of experience working in communication. Previous work with international development organisations is a plus
  • Excellent command of Indonesian and English
  • Demonstrated experience in converting complex, technical information into user friendly contents and formats
  • Expertise in managing different media channels (websites, twitter)
  • Experience in providing advice and training on communication and branding issues
  • Ability to work pro-actively and independently
  • Good organizing skills and interpersonal skills
Contract duration: This is a 110-days assignments with an average of 3.5 work days per week
Desired start date: December 2017
Duty station: Jakarta, with regular travelling to SNV's project locations.
