ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights Job Vacancy: Media and Communications Officer, Bangkok - Thailand

ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) is a network of progressive current and former lawmakers in Southeast Asia who use their unique positions to promote human rights and democracy in the region.
The APHR Secretariat is looking for a talented and creative Media and Communications Officer to join its expanding team, to be based in Bangkok or another Southeast Asian capital.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The Media and Communications Officer will play a key role in developing and implementing a communications strategy for APHR, strengthening media coverage of APHR’s advocacy initiatives through the production of a wide range of high-quality media material, and expanding APHR’s presence on social media platforms. The successful candidate will have a background in journalism, PR or the NGO sector, have a good understanding of both human rights and the media landscape in Southeast Asia, excellent writing skills, and be willing to travel extensively throughout the region.
Traditional Media Management:
  • Generate media coverage in international, regional and national media for APHR in order to build the organisation’s profile in the region;
  • Develop a network of regional and international media contacts and strengthen distribution lists to ensure coverage of APHR advocacy efforts;
  • In collaboration with the Research and Advocacy Director, draft, edit, and proofread press releases, op-eds, and other advocacy materials targeted at regional and international media;
  • Actively monitor human rights-related developments in Southeast Asia and suggest timely and creative media responses;
  • Support the Research and Advocacy Director in developing messaging around key regional human rights issues and policy initiatives, working across a variety of media platforms to maximize reach and impact;
  • Responding to inquiries, connecting press with APHR members, distributing media materials, and creating media monitoring reports;
  • Take part in and develop media material for APHR’s advocacy-related activities across the region, including Fact-Finding Missions, press conferences and other events;
  • Support monitoring and evaluation of APHR’s advocacy efforts, including monitoring media coverage; and
  • Contribute to the development of issue-specific advocacy strategies in collaboration with the Research and Advocacy team.
Online and Multimedia Management:
  • With guidance from the Research and Advocacy Director, manage and develop APHR’s online presence (website, blog, and social media), including publishing advocacy outputs, reporting on APHR activities, and soliciting and editing blog posts from members;
  • Strengthen APHR’s presence on social media networks, including by improving existing channels and developing new platforms;
  • Develop engaging and creative content – including infographics, videos and other material – for APHR’s social media platforms;
  • Manage the day-to-day outputs on APHR’s social media channels, in collaboration with the Research and Advocacy team and APHR Members; and
  • Produce succinct, broadcast-quality video reports on APHR’s work and activities for use across online platforms in support of campaigns, advocacy initiatives, and membership engagement.
Other Tasks:
  • Support with the design and production of APHR promotional materials and other printed outputs, such as brochures, flyers, and reports, and assist with proofreading, formatting, and distribution;
  • Manage APHR’s internal communications, including the production of a monthly email newsletter to APHR members;
  • Edit, proofread, and finalize internal APHR documents, including donor reports, activity reports, agendas, and concept notes;
  • Carry out other duties, including program design and support in coordination with other Secretariat staff, as required.
Reporting:
  • The Media and Communications Officer will report directly to the Research and Advocacy Director.
Skills and Experience:
  • University degree, preferably in the field of international relations, human rights, journalism, communications or a related field;
  • At least two years of relevant experience in journalism, PR or in a similar role with another NGO;
  • Solid understanding of political and human rights issues in Southeast Asia;
  • Strong knowledge of international, regional and national media across traditional and digital platforms, with an established network of media contacts;
  • Excellent writing skills with a track-record of producing different types of high-quality media outputs, including press releases and op-eds;
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and experience of managing social media channels;
  • Experience of developing and implementing successful media strategies and campaigns;
  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills;
  • A willingness to travel regularly throughout the Southeast Asia region;
  • Fluency in written and spoken English;
  • (Desirable) Knowledge of graphic design software and experience in developing content – including infographics and visual content – for online platforms;
  • (Desirable) Knowledge of videography and video editing, and experience in producing broadcast-quality videos for online platforms; and
  • (Desirable) Fluency in a regional Southeast Asian language.
Working Conditions / Salary and Benefits:
  • The position will ideally will be based in Bangkok but can be negotiated to be based in another Southeast Asian  capital. APHR operates on a standard five-day work week but staff may be required to work some evenings and weekends to monitor program activities and when on missions. Days in lieu will be provided for non-standard workdays.  APHR offers a competitive local salary package with health benefits.
