Wildlife Conservation Society Job Vacancy: Coral Reef Fish Science Officer, Bogor - West Java, Indonesian

The Wildlife Conservation Society’s Indonesia Program aims to conserve marine resources vital to the protection and sustainability of a wide range of human activities and livelihoods. It focuses on the establishment and effective management of MPAs and development of sustainable fisheries, as interlinked strategies to secure and manage Indonesia’s coastal marine resources. WCS is committed to assisting the Government of Indonesia to meet its national and international commitments to MPA establishment and management – including the commitment to achieve 20 million hectares of MPAs by 2020. MPAs benefit both biodiversity and fisheries management by protecting habitats and protecting breeding populations of important marine organisms.

Within the last 16 years, WCS have supported government partners to inventory and evaluate the condition of coral reef habitats based on ecological data from more than 34 MPAs in 13 provinces in Indonesia. Regular monitoring of resources informs all subsequent decision making. Consequently, big data from time series observations which also covering broad range of areas are available to be revealed broadly to more audiences in need, in particular our government partners and scientific society.. Our robust and standardized scientific data works out well in identifying the status of coral reefs and the related community in order to support the establishment and management of MPAs.

The study on coral reef ecosystem will still be occurring in the future, both in the existing MPAs and in the newly proposed areas. WCS is continuing the effort to provide a robust yet scientifically accurate data to support coral reef conservation program in Indonesia, as well as contribute to enrich the coral reef science broadly. Thus, there is a need of a qualified coral reef fish scientist that may help WCS to fulfil the purpose and transform the efforts taken into widely accepted scientific information.
