GIZ Indonesia - SAFE Project Job Vacancy: Advisor Innovation, Knowledge, and Communication - Jakarta

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is an international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations on behalf of the German Government.

Implemented by GIZ, the Global Fund to Promote Innovations in Agriculture and Nutrition (i4Ag)” is part of the special initiative “ONE WORLD – No Hunger” (SEWOH). On behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), i4Ag promotes gender-sensitive and use-centered innovations. With co-financing from the European Union, i4Ag is financing the project Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems (SAFE) in Brazil, Ecuador, Indonesia and Zambia.

Tropical agricultural commodities like palm oil, coffee and cocoa provide the livelihoods for millions of local communities around the world and have contributed to rural development. However, the rise in their production over the last decades has also been linked to deforestation and forest degradation. As forests are critically important to mitigating climate change, maintaining biodiversity and providing ecosystem services, their sustainable management has become a global priority.

Against this backdrop, the European Commission (EC) has drafted a proposal for a regulation on deforestation-free products, to ensure that agricultural commodities sold on the European market do not contribute to deforestation or forest degradation. Other markets as well as large private companies have made similar commitments to exclude deforestation from their supply chain. With sustainability of raw material becoming a precondition for market access, smallholder producers are at the risk to be excluded.

To address these challenges in Indonesia, SAFE supports relevant stakeholders to address agricultural drivers for deforestation in two target areas in West Kalimantan and Central Sulawesi. The aim is to improve the protection of forest while supporting local communities in accessing markets and increasing their incomes.  SAFE is implemented with the Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) as the political partner from the Indonesian Government.
