Water Management - International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines

Rice is life for millions of people around the world. At the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), a team of more than 1,300 world-class scientific and support staff is working to reduce poverty through rice science.

IRRI is looking for an experienced scientist who will lead the development of technologies in response to threats of water scarcity, floods, droughts, and salinity intrusion in coastal areas. 

The overall task will be to develop hydrological and agronomic strategies for more efficient use of water for increasing food security and improving livelihoods in irrigated areas and coastal zones of Asia. This will be achieved through intensification and diversification of rice-based cropping systems. The research will contribute to two newly established CGIAR research programs, the Global Rice Science Partnership (GRiSP) and the Water, Land, and Ecosystems Program. He/she will collaborate with agronomists, crop production specialists, economists, and breeders working on water-related issues (drought, submergence, salinity), both from IRRI and from counterpart institutions in Asia. Strong collaboration with the International water Management Institute (IWMI) is anticipated.

RESPONSIBILITIES
This position involves all aspects of leading a water management research program in collaboration with scientists from other disciplines:
 
• Development and deployment of integrated water management strategies from field to basin scale to achieve more effective use of rain and irrigation water resources in rice-based farming systems.
 
• Development of community-level water management options to optimize rice-based farming systems.
 
• Strengthening research capacity in water management of national agricultural research systems and informing policymakers and extension agents (government, NGO, private sector) on improved water management options in rice-based farming systems.
 
• Seeking opportunities for new partnerships and mobilizing funds from traditional and nontraditional sources.

 
REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will have a PhD in hydrology, agricultural water management, or a related discipline, at least 5 years of post-PhD experience (or equivalent experience prior to obtaining PhD) in agricultural water management research (across spatial and temporal scales); publication record in high-quality international journals; demonstrated ability to work in a multidisciplinary team. He or she should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and excellent written and spoken English.
