The University of Belize’s Environmental Research Institute (UB ERI) is an applied institute at the University of Belize. The mission if the UB ERI is to build scientific research capacity in Belize and work to ensure that decision-making is based on accurate knowledge for the effective management, sustainable use and conservation of natural resources. The UB ERI is looking for a talented and motivated professional intern to fill a temporary position for Database Manager. This intern would be working with the UB ERI staff at its office in Belmopan, Belize.

Summary of Responsibilities: In consultation with the Science Directors, the Database Manager will be responsible for the design, development and management of a biodiversity monitoring database and the updating of existing national monitoring and research databases under the ERI, that support national level biodiversity monitoring.

Essential Functions:
  • Design databases for national monitoring programs, such as the national biodiversity monitoring program
  • Manage these databases on a regular basis to be accessible by NGOs and government partners online
  • Regularly, update the national databases with monitoring and research data and conduct summary analyses for the preparation of national and research reports
  • Liaise with databasing personnel of private, NGO and government partners to avoid duplication of efforts and maintain collaboration
  • Develop an annual work plan in respect to database development and management and website/list serve maintenance for the ERI
  • Assist in the development of a plan and strategy for the long term sustainability of ERI’s databases
  • Provide assistance in developing an annual budget in respect to database development and management and website/listserve maintenance for the ERI
  • Responsible for the supervision and evaluation of student assistants working with databases;
Education and Experience:
  • Minimum B.Sc. in computer science or information technology
  • At least 3 years of experience in the area of database and application development
  • 3 years of web development experience using PHP, HTML5, JavaScript , CSS
  • Experience with database design, implementation and maintenance
  • Experience with open source technologies including Apache, MySQL, Oracle VirtualBox
  • Experience with client-side libraries and frameworks such as JQuery or AngularJS
  • Experience with virtualized server environments
  • Basic Linux systems administration skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience with GIS software such as ArcGIS and Google Maps would be an asset.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in standard applications such as MS Word, Power Point, and Excel.
  • Ability to organize time, manage diverse activities and multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Self-starter with high level of initiative, strong work ethic, quick learner
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
Duration: internship is for a period of 9-12 months and comes with a stipend to cover living, personal and travel expenses within Belize.
