About Asia Catalyst
Founded in 2006, Asia Catalyst builds strong civil society and advances the right to health for marginalized groups in Asia. We train leaders of community-based organizations to run effective, sustainable, and democratic organizations, and to conduct rigorous human rights research and advocacy. We are an independent organization that places the needs of marginalized communities at the center of national, regional, and international policy making.
We do this by providing capacity-building training and coaching to small community based organizations in Asia in organizational management skills, human rights documentation and advocacy, and by partnering with groups in the region to conduct research and advocacy to promote the right to health.
Asia Catalyst is a US based not for profit organization with offices in New York, Beijing and Bangkok, and an annual budget of US $900,000.
About the Research Assistant
Reporting to the Director of Partnerships and Programs, the Research assistant will provide research support for three major projects taking place over a six month period from October 2016 to March 2017.
The research assistant will support three major projects:
  • Best Practice Guide for Advocacy
  • User- or human-centered design of a virtual platform for community based organizations (CBOs)
  • Four-city community consultation for a transgender leadership program
Responsibilities
The Research Assistant will be expected to
  • Complete literature/desktop reviews of published and unpublished reports/how to guides/advocacy manuals
  • Develop case studies and reports that highlight key findings, implications, and recommendations
  • Conduct interviews, focus groups, oversee data collection, and contribute to the analysis of this information.
Qualifications
The Research Assistant will be deeply committed to Asia Catalyst’s mission. All candidates should have proven experience. Other qualifications include:
  • Strong written and spoken English (essential);
  • Strong written and spoken Mandarin (essential);
  • MA/MS or other graduate degree;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in conducting desk/archival and field research;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience writing research reports;
  • Familiarity with a broad range of research methodologies, including sourcing and using journals, manuals, archival and library material and web-based literature;
  • Ability to present complex legal and policy information in concise and readable formats; quantitative and qualitative analysis.
  • Field experience in China, East Asia, or Southeast Asia;
  • Extensive experience in human rights, HIV/AIDS and working with marginalized communities and community based organizations in Asia;
  • other Asian language fluency highly desired;
  • Strong team player who can also work independently when needed;
  • Strong multitasking abilities and ability to manage multiple deadlines;
  • Experience organizing events and/or workshops.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to planning;
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people;
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven and self-directed.
